The Baroque statue of Saint Gothard can be found in a small park of town Sadska near Nymburk. As follows from engraved inscription, the statue was made in 1777. St Gotthard is here depicted as a bishop, wearing bishop's robe, with a mitre on his head, holding a crossier in one hand and blessing with the other one. On the richly decorated Baroque pedestal there is a prayer to him to protect people against "a bad weather".

Biography

Saint Gotthard - Gotthard of Hildesheim (960 – May 5, 1038)
St. Gotthard was born in Reichersdorf (Bavaria), Germany in 960. He was educated in school of the Benedictine monastery in Niederaltaich (Bavaria). He continued his studies in Salzburg, Austria. He joined the Benedictine order at the monastery in Niederaltaich and became the Abbot in 996. He was a strong defender of the Cluny reforms and in that spirit took on the reform of the monastery in Hersfeld. He continued thereafter to reform several additional monasteries. He became the Bishop of Hildesheim in 1022. During his lifetime he built 30 churches. Legends tell that he awoke persons from the dead in order to hear their confessions and save their soles. He was canonized in 1131 by Pope Innocent II. He was the first Bavarian to be canonized. His feast day is May 4. His relics are preserved in the Benedictine monastery in Hildesheim. St. Gotthard died on May 4, 1038. The St. Gotthard pass in theAlps is named for him.

Gotthard's successors in the episcopate of Hildesheim, Bertold (1119–30) and Bernhard I (1130–53), pushed for his canonization. This was accomplished during the episcopate of Bernard, in 1131, and it took place at a synod in Rheims. There, Pope Innocent II, in the presence of Bernard and Saint Norbert of Xanten, officially made Gotthard a saint.
