The B966 road in eastern Scotland runs through the village of Edzell towards the foothills of the Grampian Mountains before veering easterly to the village of Fettercairn. A mile north of Edzell on the border of Angus and Aberdeenshire (formerly Kincardineshire) where the road turns to the east, it crosses the River North Esk at Gannochy, where in 1724 a bridge was constructed over what was a sizeable gorge.
The bridge was paid for by local farmer James Wood who employed a mason to carry out the work although he himself constructed the parapet walls.
The bridge was widened by Lord Adam George in 1796 and since then has undergone numerous works of maintenance, the latest of which was to erect stainless steel tie bars through the bridge structure.
Other than the narrowing of the road at this point, the motorist would be unaware of the size of the gorge that they are crossing. This was caused by the river boring its way through the local red sandstone.
A lay-by on the Aberdeenshire side of the bridge is situated next to a blue door which leads to a walk up northwards up the river where the bridge can be fully seen.
