A plaque on a wall on Bradgate Road, Newtown Linford, tells us about the former workhouse buildings that once stood here.
The plaque reads:
The row of three houses, 521, 523 & 525 Bradgate Road were known as 'Workhouse Row' or colloquially 'Wukkers Row/Yard'. It seems that:
the Row was built in the mid-1700's as the Parish Workhouse under the remit of Knatchbull's Act (1723).
building materials were taken from the disused Grey mansion in Bradgate Park
The Workhouse continued for the next hundred years until the Poor Law Amendment Act (1834) centralised this function to Mount Sorrel.
The row continued to be owned by the Grey Estate until 1958 when all three were sold to the remaining tenant. The row was demolished in 1968 when the 'New' 521 Bradgate Road was built. Only this wall and the later 'Brick Outhouse' remain.
