The Chester Canal stretched from Ellesmere Port to this spot and part of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal stretched from here to Autherley.
Subsequently these and other canals merged to form the modern Shropshire Union Canal.
The sculpture was erected to celebrate the restoration of the Nantwich embankment which carries the canal at a high level for 1/2 mile to the south.
The sculpture was made from an old lock gate. John Merrill used the wood from the gate to form the majority of the horse and Julian Taylor used various bits of metal work to make the horse's mane, tail and other small parts.
