"Anyone who thinks of Vienna associates this city like no other with the fragrant aroma of coffee, which is given names like Melange, Einspänner, Brauner, Verlängerter and others. And you should know these names if you want to come to one of the traditional houses and have no trouble. As a German, I say with a smile, because so far I have at least been spared the proverbial grumbling of the coffeehouse superiors.
The Viennese coffee house culture is legendary. If you ask the Viennese where they prefer to go, there is no common denominator. The city is bursting with the best coffeehouse atmosphere and there are no limits to personal taste. Whether traditional or modern, nostalgia and bohemian: everyone finds their place here and could enjoy it all day long. We would like to introduce to you today the favourite cafés of our Viennese editorial staff and those that we simply consider remarkable.
Café Sperl is located outside Vienna's 1st district and is in no way inferior to the authenticity of the large Ringstrasse cafés. Its history goes back to 1880. It used to be the regular café of operetta stars. Its somewhat dusty bohemian flair can still be felt today when you watch locals and tourists, students as well as distinguished older ladies and gentlemen chatting or just browsing through the many newspapers with melange and homemade pastries - especially the strudel is much praised - Locals and tourists, students as well as distinguished older ladies and gentlemen watching as they chat or browse through the many newspapers in peace and quiet."
