This tall concrete obelisk was erected in 1913 at the site of what was then the ruins of Fort Laramie. In 1938, the fort was sold to the US Government and given to the National Park Service to preserve and interpret as an important site in the story of America's Westward Expanion in the 19th century.
The obelisk has a plaque inset on its east side that reads as follows:
"FORT LARAMIE
A Military Post on the Oregon Trail
June 16, 1849 - March 2, 1890
This monument is erected by the State of Wyoming and a few interested residents.
1913"
In the intervening years, other plaques have been added to other sides of this monument in honor of Pony Express riders, Mormon pioneers, the Transcontinental Telegraph, and the placement of Fort Laramie on the US National Register of Historic Places.
