A sign on the upper verandah proclaims it to be the Panther Pub. This refers to The Emmaville Panther, a mythical beast. It has now been worrying the locals for 116 years starting with Harry Leader and his brother in 1902 who, after hearing a blood-curdling roar, shot the animal and sent the hide to Sydney where a tanner told them it was a panther. There have been sightings of its descendants since.
