This stone sculpture called 'Mother and Child' by Anthony Beetlestone is located in Bethesda Gardens in Hanley.

The gardens were the old burial grounds of Bethesda Chapel. Following the regeneration of the area the stone sculpture by local artist Anthony Beetlestone was commissioned.

The sculpture depicts a woman standing holding her child in her arms. The sculpture was unveiled in October 2004 as part of a public realm redevelopment.

The hand-carved sculpture forms the centrepiece to one of the new seating areas and was created with the help of youngsters at St Luke’s Primary School and the Friends of Bethesda Chapel.

To interact with local communities a series of workshops were held with children from St Luke’s Primary, where the children were asked to create clay models to see how they interpreted the theme of ‘mother and child’. The sculpture represents the motif of rebirth and new life, representing an optimistic image, whilst reflecting the regeneration and hopes of the area.

Anthony Beetlestone is a local artist who specialises in figurative sculpture. He spent seven years at art school, and before entering the world of public art and figurative sculpture, he taught in art schools in Stafford and London. (visit link)
