In Boston, near Government Center, is the Edward W. Brooke Courthouse, named after a U.S. Senator who represented Massachusetts for two terms.

The Place:

The court is on the west side of the intersection, in the same block with other government buildings.

The courthouse is a eight-story white structure that is roughly triangular-shaped. The surface has white walls with granite stone on the bottom floor. The cornerstone on the right says 1998. The courthouse is part of the Boston Municipal Court system, which is a department of the Trial Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Person:

Edward W. Brooke III (October 26, 1919 – January 3, 2015) was born in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Boston University School of Law. He was Chairman of the Finance Commission of Boston, and was elected as Massachusetts Attorney General in 1962. He was elected U.S. Senator (Republican Party) for Massachusetts in 1966, becoming the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate. He served two terms, then was defeated in election by Paul Tsongas in 1978. He then worked with various businesses and non-profit organizations.

During his term as Senator, he co-wrote the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which prohibits housing discrimination. He also was the first Republican Senator to call for the resignation of President Richard Nixon concerning the Watergate scandal.

In 2004, President George W. Bush presented Brooke with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Just after his 90th birthday, Brooke received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009.
