RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1958 (WER) NOTE--RM 1 DISTANCE IS A 1927 MEASUREMENT. STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. AN AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 WERE ESTABLISHED BY THIS PARTY. THE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION TO REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 WERE VERIFIED. THE DIRECTION TO REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WAS VERIFIED BUT THE DISTANCE COULD NOT BE CHECKED BECAUSE THE LEG OF THE TOWER WAS SET DIRECTLY IN LINE. DUE TO THE CHANGE IN THE LOCALITY AND ERRORS IN THE 1927 DESCRIPTION, A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS- THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE SUMMIT OF A BARE HILL ABOUT 1.0 MILE SOUTH OF CASTLE SHANNON, 4 MILES EAST OF BRIDGEVILLE, 6 MILES S OF THE INTERSECTION OF THE MONONGAHELA AND ALLEGHENY RIVERS AND 0.5 MILE NORTHWEST OF THE HAMILTON, FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. THE PROPERTY IS OWNED BY THE GUNTMAN ESTATE. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE SOUTH END OF THE LIBERTY TUBES AND STATE HIGHWAYS 88 AND 51, SOUTHWEST SIDE OF PITTSBURGH, GO SOUTHEASTERLY ON STATE HIGHWAYS 88 AND 51 FOR 2.45 MILE WHERE HIGHWAYS SEPARATE AND SIGN CASTLE SHANNON 1 MILE, TURN RIGHT AND FOLLOW STATE HIGHWAY 88 (LIBRARY ROAD) FOR 1.6 MILE TO HAMILTON ROAD ON THE LEFT, TURN LEFT UPHILL ON HAMILTON ROAD FOR 0.65 MILE TO THE TOP OF HILL AND THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT, CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON HAMILTON ROAD FOR 0.15 MILE TO THE SOUTHEAST END OF CURVE IN THE ROAD AND A DIM TRACK ROAD ON THE RIGHT, TURN RIGHT AND FOLLOW DIM TRACK ROAD WESTERLY FOR 0.2 MILE TO THE TOP OF HILL AND THE STATION IN THE CENTER OF THE INTERSECTION OF SEVERAL DIM TRACK ROADS. STATION MARKS ARE STANDARD DISKS STAMPED SHANNON 1927. THE SURFACE DISK IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 1 INCH. IT IS IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF A TRIANGLE FORMED BY THE DIM TRACK ROADS. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED SHANNON R.M. 1 1927, IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 3 INCHES. IT IS ON THE NORTHWEST SLOPE OF THE HILL ABOUT 42 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER OF TRACK ROAD AND 56.5 FEET WEST OF REFERENCE MARK NO. 3. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED SHANNON R.M. 2 1927, IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 1 INCH. IT IS IN THE TRIANGLE FORMED BY THE DIM TRACK ROADS. REFERENCE MARK NO. 3, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED SHANNON NO 3 1927, IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 3 INCHES. IT IS 23 FEET SOUTH OF A FIVE TRUNK TREE AND 10 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER OF A DIM TRACK ROAD. AZIMUTH MARK, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED SHANNON 1927, IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 3 INCHES. IT IS 52.5 FEET NORTH-NORTHWEST OF THE CENTER OF THE METAL GATE LEADING TO THE CEMETERY, 35.5 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER OF HAMILTON ROAD, 2 FEET WEST OF CYCLONE FENCE AROUND CEMETERY AND ABOUT 100 FEET SOUTHEAST OF ANDREA DRIVE. A STANDARD WITNESS POST WAS SET 2 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE MARK.
