"Across the country, Sept. 11 is marked as a day of remembrance. This Monday is the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that rocked New York City, Washington and rural Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.

In Denton on Monday, the city will dedicate its newest work of public art: a bell tower commemorating the first responders who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

The memorial, installed in front of the Central Fire Station in mid-August, is a 30-foot-tall steel tower that now houses Denton's original bronze fire bell, which was purchased in 1884 and which hung in the tower at City Hall West.

Beneath the bell is an I-beam from the World Trade Center, and the number "343" written on the inner walls to remember the number of firefighters who were killed at Ground Zero. The remaining facing planks are stamped with the words "courage," "service" and "dedication."

Millie Giles, a former University of North Texas art professor and a member of the Denton public art committee, originated the concept design for the bell tower that now stands in front of the Central Fire Station and Denton Firefighters Museum. She said the project has taken two years and nine months of steady work with Fire Chief Robin Paulsgrove and Kirkpatrick Architecture Studio in Denton.

"Early on, when we were planning, I said something about heroes," Giles said. "Chief Paulsgrove said, 'No, hero is an outsider word,' and that 'we say courage, service and dedication.'"

The dedication on Monday will take place during Denton's Public Safety Day, and there will be emergency vehicle demonstrations, bomb squad demonstrations, fire station tours, activities for children, public safety vendors, free food and more.

Exhibits on display will include the Denton Fire Department's bomb robot, Sherlock the Arson Dog, rescue demonstrations with the Jaws of Life, and other family-friendly activities.

The keynote speaker for the event is retired New York City firefighter Bill Spade, who will share his experiences at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001.

Out of the 12 responding firefighters on FDNY Rescue 5, a unit of the Special Operations Command, Spade was the only survivor that day.

From 1983 to 2003, Spade served New York City, first with the police department and then the fire department. Now retired, Spade is a docent at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City."
