After the Great Gravenhurst Fires of 1887 and 1897 the Town decided to build a multi-purpose facility that would be a more fire-resistant brick building. The structure cost $5,000 and was deemed extravagant by some, earning the nickname "Mickle's Folly" after Charles Mickle, the Mayor at the time.
Since opening on March 12, 1901 it has welcomed more than six million visitors.
