An der Fassade des Bürgerspitals in Retz, Znaimerstraße 7 steht ein schlichtes Holzkreuz auf einem Granitsockel. Es wurde 1863 angeschafft. Der Christus ist von der Firma Mohrenberg in Wien aus Zink gegossen und bronziert.
Das Kreuz ist nach mündlicher Überlieferung ein Abguss nach dem Lettnerkreuz von St. Stefan in Wien. Es wurde am 16.11.1863 feierlich geweiht. Am 28.09.1940 sollte das Kreuz im Auftrag der Kreisleitung von der Gassenfront des Bürgerspitals entfernt werden. Diese Anordnung empörte zutiefst die religiösen Gefühle der Bevölkerung. Der Bäckermeister Johann Hornung machte sich zu ihrem Wortführer. Sein Einschreiten an Ort und Stelle führte zur Aufschiebung des Planes (der auch nie zur Ausführung kam).

On the facade of the citizen hospital in Retz, Znaimerstraße 7 is a simple wooden cross on a granite base. It was acquired in 1863. The Christ was cast from zinc and bronzed by the company Mohrenberg in Vienna.
The cross is according to oral tradition a cast after the rood cross of St. Stefan in Vienna. It was solemnly consecrated on 16.11.1863. On 28.09.1940 the cross was to be removed on behalf of the district administration from the street front of the citizen hospital. This arrangement deeply outraged the religious sentiments of the population. Master baker Johann Hornung became their spokesman. His intervention on the spot led to the postponement of the plan (which never came to fruition).
