There are several veterans memorials to be found on the courthouse grounds, but this small one is the only one to give a nod to veterans of all wars. It's easy to spot near the intersection of Houston and Crockett Streets.

Description of Memorial:
This gray granite memorial sits atop a gray granite plinth, standing about four feet tall. There is text but on one side.
The current Grayson County Courthouse is on the same site as five of the six previous courthouses that have served the county since 1846. A riot in 1930 was the cause of the last courthouse's demise, as an angry mob torched it in order to get at a man locked in the courthouse's fireproof vault. He was there for his protection pending trial for assaulting the wife of the man who was employing him to work his land.
The man accused of the crime, George Hughes, really did commit the crime. The mob had drawn their own conclusions about what Hughes had done, and the Texas Rangers were here to provide security. One of them, Frank Hamer, would be in the news in just a few years for leading the posse that caught Bonnie and Clyde. In any event, the mob grew uglier -- Hamer warned that there was no chance they'd be able to hold the trial for Hughes -- and stone-throwing turned into gasoline and matches, leaving the courthouse in a pile of rubble. The mob dragged Hughes's corpse from the vault and hanged it, and it would be six years before Grayson County had a courthouse again.
