Text from the marker:

Designed and constructed to honor all of the men and women from the state of Alabama who have died while serving our county since September 11 2001, terrorist attack on the United States.

The monument in the center of the plaza consists of a hexagonal base of black granite. Each of the five sides of the base represents one of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, The Army, The Marines, The Navy, The Air Force and the Coast Guard. Etched on the sixth side of the base are the names of those who have fallen.

Situated atop the base is a bronze casting of a rifle and a bayonet, boots and helmet. This is a traditional symbol dating back to the American Civil War that was used in place of a cross to give honor and respect to a soldier who was killed at a battle site. It is used today as a means of showing respect for the dead among the still living members of the unit.

The two dark stone bands bisecting the plaza represent the twin towers of the World Trade Center. They begin on the east side of the monument to show where the struggle began, continue across the ground in a literal connection to America soil, intersect with the monument to represent the heart of the war, and continue across the west end of the memorial to erect into the vertical 9/11 and "global war on terrorism" towers.

The brown and tan bricks used on the ground of the memorial were chosen to represent the combat uniform worn by the service men and women during the war on terror. The concrete and rock salt paving symbolizes the sand on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan the seat wall and landscaping that circle the perimeter of the memorial provide an unending united focus on the monument and a space for quiet reflection and solitude
