The Fulton Building began its life in 1906 as a first class office building. It had a twin across Sixth Street, and together the two buildings with their distinctive center atriums formed a majestic gateway entrance to Pittsburgh across the Sixth Street Bridge from Old Allegheny City. Unfortunately, the Fulton's twin was torn down in the name of progress. A misguided 1960's urban renewal project replaced the other building with a fairly ugly parking garage. But the Fulton survives.
This building went from Class A office space to Class B to Class C. By the late 1970's its main tenant was a trade school. The former lobby was a nightclub for the glitter and cocaine crowd in the early 80's. But then came the next transformation. Half of the street level is now the Byham Theater, a nice comfortable small theater that stages productions that don't work well on the big stages at Heinz Hall or the Benedum Theater. The other half is the lobby of the majestic Renaissance Hotel. This Hotel is now THE choice for upscale travelers staying in downtown Pittsburgh.
There is a beautiful view from two sides of the building over across the Allegheny River to PNC Park.
What will the Fulton Building be in its next incarnation?
