“Women are Persons” This group of figures represent five women who challenged the definition of “persons” eligible to serve in the Senate to include women, Judge Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung and Irene Parlby.

These figures are so inviting it’s almost impossible to get a picture of them alone. There’s a place to sit and rest awhile, some bronze tea to sip… Could have been the sunshine that day, but I couldn’t seem to find a time when these statues were alone so I could snap a few photos. Good thing, since the logging requirements call for someone to be interacting with them!

The figures represent five women, listed above, who in 1929, challenged the interpretation of the time of Section 24 of the British North America Act of 1867. The Supreme Court initially upheld the practice of the day, that of excluding women from those “persons” considered eligible to be summoned to the Senate, however in October of 1929, the Privy Council reversed this decision. None of the famous five became Senators, but they did achieve an important symbolic victory.
