Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, né le 29 avril 1762 à Limoges dans la Haute-Vienne est un militaire français.
Après une courte participation à la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis, il retourne à la vie civile et s'installe à Limoges à la tête d'un petit commerce.
Au moment où éclate la Révolution française, il adhère aux idées républicaines, ce qui lui permet d'obtenir le commandement d'un bataillon de volontaires. Favorisé par son républicanisme affiché, Jourdan devient un brillant général de la Révolution : il est vainqueur à Wattignies et surtout à la bataille de Fleurus, le 26 juin 1794, événement qui sauve la France d'une invasion et qui lui vaut une popularité immédiate. Rallié à Napoléon Bonaparte, il est élevé à la dignité de maréchal d'Empire en 1804. Après la chute de l'Empire, il mène une belle carrière au service des Bourbons et devient gouverneur des Invalides jusqu'à sa mort, en 1833.
Cette statue en bronze de Louis Robert sur piédestal a été inaugurée sur cette place le 30 septembre 1860 et représente le Maréchal en pied, main sur l'épée.

Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, born April 29, 1762 in Limoges is a French soldier.
After a short participation in the war of independence of the United States, he returned to civilian life and moved to Limoges at the head of a small business.
At the moment when the French Revolution broke out, he adhered to republican ideas, which enabled him to obtain the command of a battalion of volunteers. Favored by his declared republicanism, Jourdan becomes a brilliant general of the Revolution: he is victorious at Wattignies and especially at the battle of Fleurus, June 26, 1794, event that saves France from an invasion and which is worth to him an immediate popularity. Rallied with Napoleon Bonaparte, he was elevated to the rank of Marshal of the Empire in 1804. After the fall of the Empire, he led a good career in the service of the Bourbons and became governor of the Invalides until his death in 1833.
This real-size pedestrian bronze statue of Louis Robert on a stone plinth was inaugurated on this place on September 30, 1860 and represents the Marshal hand on the sword.
