As you drive the roads of Oklahoma, you will occasionally come across a bridge, which might well go unnoticed. Unlike the large metal bridges that cross the various rivers and creeks, these smaller WPA-constructed bridges hide themselves beneath the roadway, with only simple concrete railings visible.
This bridge is located on Coffee Creek Road, just east of Douglas Road. The rural intersection is located three miles north of Route 66, in the far northeast section of Edmond. On either side of Coffee Road Road, the concrete barriers consist of four pillars with recessed panels, connected by concrete railings. This is a large bridge opening, with three concrete tunnels approximately five feet high and five feet wide. It is located at the water crossing of an unnamed creek. Over 3700 of these and larger bridges were constructed by the WPA during the mid-1930s. The WPA stamp is embossed on the flat concrete portion of the railings, on either side of the road and reads "WPA 1936".
We noticed the bones of an unfortunate deer who either tried to jump across the bridge railing, or perhaps died while drinking from the creek. Sad.
