This song draws on the real life maritime disaster of the sinking of the SS Ellan Vannin which is commemorated by this plaque on the quayside in Ramsey.

The ship sailed from Ramsey in very stormy weather on 3rd December 1909 and was loss at the entrance to the Mersey approaching Liverpool later that day.

'The song was written by Hughie Jones and was originally recorded by his group, English folk legends The Spinners. It tells the tale of a ship that sank in stormy weather whilst bound for Liverpool from the Isle of Man in 1909 killing all 36 aboard.' (visit link)
