Le titre de Bouddha désigne une personne ayant, notamment par sa sagesse (prajña), réalisé l'éveil, c'est-à-dire atteint le nirvana (selon le hinayana), ou transcendé la dualité samsara. L'appellation de bouddha peut donc référer à plusieurs personnes.
Nous avons ici une représentation de Chan Butai, le gros Bouddha. Loin de l’image d’un ascète, ce Bouddha souriant est représenté ventru, souvent entouré d’enfant et de lingots d’or à ses pieds.
C’est un symbole de prospérité, de joie de vivre, de sagesse et un porte-bonheur : frotter son ventre apporterait richesse et chance, dans la croyance populaire.

The title of Buddha is given to any person having, because of his wisdom (prajña), reached the awakening state and attained the Nirvana (according to hinayana), or having transcended samsara. The name Buddha can thus designate several individuals.
This statue represents Chan Budai, the Fat Buddha. Far from the image of an ascetic, this smiling Buddha has a full belly, and he is often surrounded by children and gold bars.
Budai in folklore is admired for his jovial attitude, plenitude, and wisdom of contentment. One belief popular in folklore maintains that rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck, and prosperity.
