It connects the pedestrian and cycle pathway from Gosford to Woy Woy and is now part of the NSW Coastal Cycleway network. On the north side is a plaque for the Opening of the Bridge in 2008, which partly reads:
THE SPIKE MILLIGAN BRIDGE
The PERSON:
Spike Milligan, a well-known identity in comedy and the theatre, was born Terence Alan Milligan, in 1918, in India; where he spent his early years. He died in February 2002, and is buried at Winchelsea, in England.
"Spike Milligan gained worldwide recognition through his creative input and starring in the long running 1950s and 60s BBC radio comedy series, 'The Goon Show'. He was a frequent visitor to Woy Woy where his parents lived." [Sign next to the bridge.]
The BRIDGE:
"It is fitting that a cycleway bridge be named in Spike's honour, as he developed a series of bike safety books for the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority in 1983. To see these books and more visit the Spike Milligan Room within the Woy Woy Library, 1200 metres ahead on Blackwall Road.
"It is an award winning design by local bridge designer, Jim Alexander. The bridge is 25.8 metres above sea level at its highest point and 85 metres in length.
"The plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Gosford City, Councillor Jim Macfadyen, and the Milligan family on Saturday, 29 March 2008."
I understand, that in his 'sometimes droll humour', he once described the town of Woy Woy, as "the world's largest above ground cemetery". (
