When I took my photos on New Years Day (2016) the clock had two square faces, with one facing north 'up' Horton Street, and the other facing south. The clocks had stopped at 12 o'clock, while it was after 3.15 pm in the afternoon when I took the photos. Since then, there has been the plan to get them going again, with the Port Macquarie RSL leading the way with enthusiasm. An article in the Port Macquarie local paper hints that there may be four faces in the future.
MARCH 4 2016. This article gives the year of 1963 of the clock being unveiled.
The faces don't have any minute marks, but the hours are marked with black Roman numerals. The black hands have slightly bulbous, but tapered ends. The two faces are covered by glass, and the white painted metal surround could do with another coat of paint. The metal 'box' is bolted to a metal pipe stand that protrudes from the top of the tall square sandstone column that has vertical 'flutes'. At the base of the northern side is a hatch for accessing 'the workings'.
A pink-brown flecked polished granite plaque on the southern side of the tall, square, fluted sandstone tower reads:
This clock was presented to the
Town of
Port Macquarie
to commemorate the work of
the Women's Agricultural
Security Production Service
known as W.A.S.P.S.
during World War II
1939 - 1945
Mary St Clair Pres. Lena Campbell Sec.
