Die Gemeinde Balzers umfasst in einer landschaftlich schönen Lage die alten Dörfer Balzers und Mäls, in ihrer Mitte den Burghügel Gutenberg. Erstmals im Jahre 842 als „palazoles“ (Pfalz, Herrenhof) erwähnt, zählt die Gemeinde heute rund 4500 Einwohner, davon sind etwa 30% Ausländer.
Das Gebiet ist seit 7'000 Jahren besiedelt. Bis zur Bildung einer politischen Gemeinde (1810) umschrieben Gemeindebriefe die Dorfordnung. Neben der Landwirtschaft gab der Rodverkehr (Monopol des Gütertransports) etwas Erwerb. Wegen der Grenzlage am Rhein und als Eingangstor zu wichtigen Alpenpässen litt das Dorf immer wieder unter kriegerischen Ereignissen.
Mit dem Ausbau von Strasse und Bahn in der Schweizer Nachbarschaft seit 1850 versiegten die Einkünfte aus dem Rodverkehr. Auswanderungen und der Zwang zu Saisonarbeit waren Folgen. Den Rhein überquerte man mit einer Fähre, bis 1871 die erste Brücke entstand. Besserung brachte der Zollvertrag (1924) mit der Schweiz, der die Grenzen öffnete.
Nach 1945 setzte eine rasante Wirtschaftsentwicklung ein. Heute zählt Balzers rund 300 Gewerbe- und Industriebetriebe mit 3'000 Arbeitsplätzen. Die wenigen Balzner Bauern produzieren immer noch 1,8 Mio. Liter Milch jährlich. Grösstes Unternehmen ist die 1946 als Balzers AG gegründete OC Oerlikon.
Das Siedlungsgebiet weitete sich stark aus und zählt heute etwa 1800 Haushalte. Die Gemeinde baute ihre Infrastruktur auf hohem Niveau aus und weist ein äusserst reiches Vereins- und Kulturleben auf.

The municipality Balzers includes in a scenic location, the old villages Balzers and Mäls, in their midst the castle hill Gutenberg. First mentioned in 842 as "palazoles" (Palatinate, Herrenhof), the community today has about 4500 inhabitants, of which about 30% are foreigners.
The area has been inhabited for 7,000 years. Until the formation of a political community (1810) communal letters circumscribed the village system. In addition to agriculture, the road traffic (monopoly of freight transport) gave some purchase. Because of the border position on the Rhine and as an entrance to important Alpine passes, the village suffered again and again under military events.
With the expansion of road and rail in the Swiss neighborhood since 1850, the income from the road traffic stalled. Emigration and the compulsion to seasonal work were consequences. The Rhine was crossed by a ferry until the first bridge was built in 1871. The customs treaty (1924) with Switzerland, which opened the borders, improved.
After 1945, a rapid economic development began. Today, Balzers counts around 300 commercial and industrial companies with 3,000 jobs. The few Balzner farmers still produce 1.8 million liters of milk annually. The largest company is OC Oerlikon, founded in 1946 as Balzers AG.
The settlement area expanded strongly and today counts about 1800 households. The community developed its infrastructure at a high level and has an extremely rich club and cultural life.
