Forest Cemetery is located in Kootenai County, Idaho. The Coeur d’Alene area is surrounded by dozens of lakes left behind by the glaciers from the ice age. There are more than 55 lakes within easy driving distance. Coeur d’Alene is the county seat of Kootenai County, the city has a population of approximately 45,000 residents.

There are ten cemeteries in Coeur d’Arlene, this one has the most interments.

Forest Cemetery was originally called Fort Sherman Cemetery and was owned by the US Army at Fort Sherman from 1877 to 1898. It was then purchase by the city of Coeur d' Alene.

The Forest Cemetery is approximately 21 acres in size with hundreds of towering pine trees and is well maintained. There is a large veterans section with traditional upright white headstones with many Civil War Veterans from the Grand Army of the Republic are interred here. There are 15,976 known interments with one of the earliest being:

Marion Gutchins born on June 22, 1858 and passed away in June 1881, she was 23 years of age.

There is a sign near the entrance transcribed as follows:

Testimonies of Devotion, pride and remembrance
are carved in stone to pay warm tribute to
accomplishments and to the life - not death - of a
loved one. The cemetery is homeland for family
memorials that are the sustaining source of comfort
to the living.
