[FR] Samuel Leroy Jackson entre au Morehouse College d'Atlanta pour entreprendre des études d'architecture, mais c'est avec un diplôme d'art dramatique qu'il en ressort en 1972. Il fait ses débuts au cinéma la même année dans Together for Days de Michael Schultz, mais il préfère se consacrer au théâtre en jouant à New York.
Il y fait la rencontre de Spike Lee qui lui confie par la suite quelques petits rôles dans ses films (Do the right thing, Mo' Better Blues). Cette collaboration lui permet d'obtenir au festival de Cannes en 1991 le prix du meilleur second rôle pour Jungle Fever, dans lequel il incarne un junkie alors qu'il sort d'une cure de désintoxication.
Mais c'est son rôle de Jules Winnfield, le tueur philosophe de Pulp Fiction de Quentin Tarantino (1994), qui le propulse au rang de star. Le même réalisateur le dirigera à nouveau dans Jackie Brown en 1997 et leur collaboration continue sur presque l'intégralité de la filmographie de Tarantino, faisant de Sam Jackson son comédien fétiche.
Sacré « acteur américain le plus prolifique » des années 1990, Samuel L. Jackson est surtout connu pour ses rôles de policiers comme dans Kiss of Death, Négociateur et S.W.A.T. unité d'élite. Cela lui permet de décrocher le rôle du plus célèbre policier noir, Shaft. Présent dans bon nombre de films d'action à gros budget, il a pour partenaire Bruce Willis dans Une journée en enfer, avec qui il avait déjà tourné Pulp Fiction, et qu'il retrouvera plus tard dans Incassable. Il retrouve également John Travolta dans Basic. Toujours aussi actif dans les années 2000, il tourne énormément de films dont xXx et la prélogie de Star Wars, dans lequel il incarne le maître Jedi Mace Windu.
Samuel L. Jackson est un fan inconditionnel des Falcons, l'équipe de football américain d'Atlanta, et bien que natif de Washington, il supporte cette équipe de Géorgie.
