[FR] Après des études d'art dramatique à la London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, il débute sa carrière sur les planches des théâtres de Londres. Rapidement remarqué dans Hedda Gabler (2005), il remporte finalement un Olivier Award pour son double rôle dans Frankenstein en 2011 avant d'endosser le rôle-titre dans une mise en scène d’Hamlet en 2015.
Après des rôles secondaires dans plusieurs séries et téléfilms, notamment celui du physicien Stephen Hawking dans Hawking en 2004, c'est son rôle principal dans la série Sherlock qui fait de lui une star internationale depuis 2010. Ces deux rôles lui valent des nominations aux British Academy Television Awards et il remporte un Emmy Award pour Sherlock. Ses rôles dans Parade's End et The Hollow Crown sont également salués. Parallèlement à son travail d'acteur, sa voix caractéristique l'amène aussi à se consacrer à la narration de documentaires ou de programmes radiophoniques avec BBC Radio.
