Santa Maria Formosa is located in the Castella neighbourhood of Venice. The present church was built in 1492, but the original foundation can be traced back to the 7th century, when legend has it the Virgin Mary appeared in the form of a voluptuous woman ("Formosa" in Italian) to St Magnus, Bishop of Oderzo, and ordered him to build Her a church under a 'white cloud'.
That church, in turn, was replaced by another in 1060, and a couple of times more before the famed Renaissance architect Mauro Codussi built the present-day church, beginning in 1492.
Architecturally, the side facing the square is in the Renaissance-style of Codussi. The north face, completed in 1602, is in the Baroque style.
The church is open daily to visitors from 1000 until 1700.
Sundays are closed except for worshipers.
