In 1833 Horace Bushnell was ordained as the pastor of the North Congregational Church in Hartford, CT. The same year, on September 13, he married Mary Apthorp. Together they had three children.
Mary Mary Apthorp Bushnell fulfilled Horace Bushnell's ideal of a minister's wife. She was involved in parish affairs and, when he was away, would fill in for him in such duties as visitations, entertainment, and establishing Bible classes. Mary Apthorp Bushnell was also instrumental in the establishment of the Hartford Female Seminary.
