Die Hauptwache ist ein barockes Gebäude in der Frankfurter Innenstadt. Es ist namensgebend für den Platz 'An der Hauptwache' und den unterirdischen U- und S-Bahnhof. Das ehemalige Wachengebäude wurde 1729–30 vom Stadtbaumeister Johann Jakob Samhaimer erbaut.
Die Hauptwache war der Sitz der Stadtwehr und enthielt auch ein Gefängnis. Die hier stationierten Soldaten gehörten zum Linienbataillon der regulären Armee der Freien Stadt Frankfurt. Als Preußen 1866 die Stadt annektierte, verlor Frankfurt mit seiner Souveränität auch seine militärische Bedeutung und damit die Stadtwehr. Das Gefängnis wurde aufgegeben, die Hauptwache aber weiterhin als militärisches Wachlokal genutzt. 1903 verlegte die preußische Armee die Wache und die Stadt kaufte das Gebäude zurück. Nach einer Sanierung und einem Umbau des Gebäudes, bei dem die Räume des Erdgeschosses zusammengelegt wurden und nach Norden ein Anbau mit einer Terrasse entstand, eröffnete die Hauptwache im Dezember 1905 als Café, das sie bis heute geblieben ist. Das Caféhaus und vor allem die benachbarte Normaluhr wurden zum bekanntesten Treffpunkt für Verabredungen in der Innenstadt.
1944 brannte die Hauptwache nach den schweren Luftangriffen auf Frankfurt am Main völlig aus. 1954 wurde sie vereinfacht wieder aufgebaut. Dieses Provisorium mit verändertem Dach blieb bis zum Bau der U-Bahn. 1967 wurde das Gebäude zunächst komplett abgebaut und ein Jahr später – an geringfügig veränderter Position – über dem neuen U-Bahnhof originalgetreu neu aufgebaut und wiedereröffnet.

The Hauptwache (English: Main Guard) is a baroque building in the Frankfurt city centre. It is name-giving for the place 'An der Hauptwache' and the underground station. The former guard building was built in 1729-30 by city architect Johann Jakob Samhaimer.
The Hauptwache was the seat of the city guard and contained also a prison. The soldiers stationed here belonged to the Line Battalion, the regular army of the Free City of Frankfurt. When Prussia annexed the city in 1866, Frankfurt lost with its sovereignty also its military importance and thus the city guard. The prison was abandoned, but the Hauptwache continued to be used as a military guardhouse. In 1903, the Prussian army moved the guard and the city bought back the building. After a renovation and reconstruction of the building, in which the rooms of the ground floor were merged and a north annex with a terrace was created, the Hauptwache opened in December 1905 as a café and remains one to this day. The café house and especially the neighbouring Normal Clock became the most famous meeting place for appointments in the city centre.
In 1944, after the heavy air raids on Frankfurt am Main, the Hauptwache burnt down. In 1954 it was reopened in a provisional form. This interim solution with a altered roof remained until the construction of the subway. In 1967, the building was first completely dismantled and one year later - at a slightly different position - true to original rebuild and reopened above the new underground U-Bahn station.
