When we visited the Zortman Cemetery it was in June, bright sunny skies and our journey to the cemetery was on a very rutted dirt road that ascended to a steep hill.

The Zortman Cemetery is very rustic and large trees encompass the surrounding area. The cemetery is maintained, though the dirt road leading to the cemetery is not so much.

The Zortman Cemetery was established in the early 1900s and it is still being used. There are approximately 93 known interments, however there are many that are unmarked as wooden grave markers have deteriorated over the decades.

One of the more interesting aspects of the Zortman Cemetery is the town's namesake Oliver "Pete" Zortman's remains were re-interred in this cemetery after 72 years. This was in 2005, and he was placed to rest in a new pine coffin after a trip from Big Timber, Montana in the back of a pickup truck. In his honor, a large rock with a memorial plaque is near the entrance to the cemetery where Oliver "Pete" Zortman is finally at rest.
