Lunan is a rural community on the Angus coast halfway between the towns of Arbroath and Montrose. Its parish church is now no longer in use but the graveyard in which it stands still is and it is here that the 1st World War memorial stands.
It is of granite with a celtic wheel cross on a square plinth. The lettering is leaded and painted black and lists the names of the men of the parish along with the farm names that they belonged to. The inscription reads as follows:
'IN MEMORY OF THE 'OLD BOYS' OF LUNAN SCHOOL WHO FELL IN THE EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1919
ANDREW ARBUTHNOTT, BRAEHEAD
JAMES BROWN, ARBIKIE
ARTHUR W HENDRY, LUNAN
DAVID S HOGG, DRUMBERTNOT
GEORGE E HOGG, DRUMBERTNOT
JOHN JOLLY, MOUNTBOY
DAVID MACAULAY, DENHEAD
GEORGE MACAULAY, DENHEAD
JAMES PATTULLO, ARBIKIE
ARTHUR D TAYLOR, COTHILL
JAMES TODD, COURTHILL
ALEXANDER WATT, DRUMBERTNOT
ALEXANDER WILSON, BRAEHEAD
THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'
At the foot of the plinth is the name of the designers of the memorial, Gibb Brothers, Ashgrove Road, Aberdeen.
On the opposite face of the memorial, the eastern side, is a further inscription to those lost in World War II, which reads as follows:
'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF LUNAN WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945
HEW BLAIR IMRIE, LUNAN
THOMAS ALEXANDER, WHITE INN
DAVID SPALDING, UPPER DYSART
JAMES WOOD, BRAEHEAD'
The memorial stands on the north-west side of the church and is close enough to the roadside to be read from there.
