"...Lord all pitying Jesu blest, Grant them eternal rest" is a translation of the J. M. Neale's Latin vulgate hymn "Dies Irae". This is name by which the sequence in the requiem Masses is commonly known. They are the opening words of the first verse: Dies iræ, dies illa.
The words at the foot of the two tablet of the War Memorial are the English translation of the last two lines of the hymn. One line appears on each tablet reading from left to right.
