The purple crocus is a symbol of the Rotary Clubs world wide campaign to eradicate polio. The colour represents coloured dye used to mark the finger of a child that has been immunised.

The Rotary Crocus is one of the leading international fundraisers for the End Polio Now Campaign. Since 2012 Rotary Crocuses have raised around £1,200,000 and been distributed in 15 countries. They are an easy way for every Club to reach out to your wider community to raise funds and awareness for End Polio Now. At the same time they help to raise the public profile of Rotary. The Crewe-based "Men In Sheds" project pledged their support to the Crewe Rotary, who are supporting a campaign to beat Polio and help children across the world. The members created a number of wooden plaques which will be placed in Queen's Park, Christchurch (Crewe centre) and St Mary's RC School (Dane Bank). They celebrate the Rotary Club of Crewe's contribution to the "END POLIO NOW" campaign, which has seen members plant 21,000 purple crocus in schools and public places round the town.
A report about this was written in the Crewe Chronicle - 12th December 2016. (visit link)

"Crewe Clean Team held its fifth annual bulb planting morning at Christ Church in the centre of Crewe on Saturday (21st October).
Six Scout cubs and their leaders from 1st SWC (The Andrews) and two Guides and their leader from 5th Hartford started at 9.30am and in two hours planted over 500 daffodils and 100 tulips in the churchyard.
They were also joined by three Rotarians and together we planted 1000 purple crocuses to celebrate the Rotary Club's part in the great strides made to eradicate polio. This is the second year that we have done this.
Cubs, Rotarians and Crewe Clean Team members are pictured behind a sign that commemorates the planting of the crocuses.
Be sure to take a walk through the churchyard next Spring to enjoy the results of the efforts." Source: (visit link)
