Hovedbanegården er et centralt knudepunkt i Aarhus for trafikken såvel mod nord som mod syd. Her er en gennemstrøm på mere end 20.000 daglig rejsende fra ind- og udland og er dermed en af Danmarks mest trafikrede stationer uden for hovedstaden.
I tilknytning til banegården ligger shoppingcentret Bruuns Galleri med masser af gode shoppingmuligheder.
Aarhus Hovedbanegård er bygget i 1927 og er en sækbanegård, hvor togene kun kan køre ind ét sted og skal forlade Aarhus samme vej. Deraf navnet Sækbanegård - lidt ligesom en sæk, som kun har ét hul (én indgang).

Aarhus Hovedbanegård: a overhead railway station with stairs down to the platforms.
Aarhus Central Station was built in 1927 under the management of the architects K. T. Seest and A. Hoeeg-Hansen.
The project combined the Central Station and the Central Post Office; and a joint building plan for the whole area of the Central Station Square and the square Park Alle - Ryesgade - Soender Alle was followed, (Soendre Kirkegaard was once situated here).
