Le tracé intérieur du canal Saint-Louis permet d'éviter l'embouchure du Rhône vers la Méditerranée. En rive gauche du fleuve, l'écluse de Port-Saint-Louis donne accès au canal depuis le Grand Rhône . Elle s'ouvre sur un bassin de 14 hectares permettant aux navires d'évoluer librement avant le passage de l'écluse, dans le sens Rhône-port ou inversement. Ses dimensions devaient correspondre au gabarit des navires de mer qui se dirigeaient vers le Rhône, ainsi qu'aux bateaux du fleuve. Les travaux de l'écluse débutés en 1870 sont terminés en juin 1873, soit deux années après la mise en eau du canal. Le chantier, conduit par M. Pascal, ingénieur en chef du service spécial maritime des Bouches-du-Rhône, MM. Bernard et Guérard, ingénieurs ordinaires des Ponts et Chaussées, a néanmoins pu se faire sur un terrain asséché, à l'abri d'un batardeau formé naturellement. Elle a été rénovée en 1996 par la Compagnie Nationale du Rhône : les portes busquées qui ferment actuellement l'écluse ont remplacé les vantaux d'origine. La maison qui servit de maison éclusière fut construite en 1864 pour loger les employés des Ponts et Chaussées, à l'ouverture du chantier du canal.

Description:

L'écluse de Port-Saint-Louis marque l'entrée, sur la rive gauche du Grand Rhône , dans l'ancien bassin portuaire du canal Saint-Louis , actuel port de plaisance. L'ouvrage, auquel on accède par un chemin endigué, a conservé ses matériaux d'origine : murs bajoyers en pierre de taille calcaire avec bittes d'amarrage en métal disposées sur la longueur. Les vantaux d'origine étaient en tôle. Les portes busquées métalliques actuelles amont et aval sont activées par un vérin. Une passerelle piétonne de service est mise en place sur chacune des deux portes. Construite pour accueillir des gabarits maritimes, le sas de l'écluse mesure 160 m de long, pour une largeur de 22 m et un tirant d'eau de 7,50 m. Un pont basculant permet de franchir l'écluse sur la partie aval du sas, et ainsi de relier le centre-ville de Port-Saint-Louis à la presqu'île du Mazet, formée par le canal. Les deux ouvrages pont et écluse - sont gérés par un poste de surveillance commun.

The interior route of the Saint-Louis Canal makes it possible to avoid the mouth of the Rhone towards the Mediterranean. On the left bank of the river, the Port-Saint-Louis lock gives access to the canal from the Grand Rhône. It opens on a basin of 14 hectares allowing the ships to evolve freely before the passage of the lock, in the direction Rhone-port or conversely. Its dimensions should correspond to the size of the seagoing ships that were heading towards the Rhone, as well as the boats of the river. The lock's work, begun in 1870, was completed in June 1873, two years after the canal was flooded. The site, led by Mr. Pascal, chief engineer of the special maritime service of Bouches-du-Rhone, MM. Bernard and Guérard, engineers ordinary Ponts et Chaussées, nevertheless could be done on a dry ground, sheltered by a naturally formed cofferdam. It was renovated in 1996 by the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône: the curved doors that currently close the lock have replaced the original leaves. The house that served as a lock house was built in 1864 to house the employees of the Bridges and Roads, at the opening of the Canal construction site.

The Port-Saint-Louis lock marks the entrance, on the left bank of the Grand Rhone, into the former port basin of the Canal Saint-Louis, the current marina. The structure, which is reached by a dammed road, has retained its original materials: walls limestone stone walls with metal mooring bends arranged along the length. The original leaves were made of sheet metal. The current upstream and downstream metal gates are activated by a jack. A pedestrian service bridge is set up on each of the two doors. Built to accommodate maritime gauges, the lock chamber is 160 m long, 22 m wide and has a draft of 7.50 m. A tilting bridge makes it possible to cross the lock on the downstream part of the airlock, and thus connect the city center of Port-Saint-Louis to the peninsula of Mazet, formed by the canal. Both bridge and lock structures - are managed by a common monitoring station.
