Die Marktkirche, ehemals Jesuitenkirche "St. Xaverius" am Kamp mit ihrer prächtigen Barockfassade ist neben der Kölner Jesuitenkirche das bedeutendste Gotteshaus des Ordens in Nordwestdeutschland. Als Stiftung des Fürstbischofs Ferdinant von Fürstenberg zu Ehren des heiligen Franziskus Xaverius wurde sie von Anton Hülse in den Jahren 1682-92 erbaut. Die dreischiffige Basilika mit Emporen zeigt sich nach kürzlich erfolgter Restaurierung im Inneren ungewöhnlich hell und schmuckvoll. Die Konstruktion ist gotisierend, die Ausstattung überwiegend barock. Der im 2. Weltkrieg zerstörte Barockaltar wird derzeit originalgetreu wiedererrichtet. 1996 erfuhr das Innere der Kirch eine grundlegende Renovierung.
Mit der Marktkirche, durch eine weiträumige Gebäudegruppe verbunden, sind das Gymnasium Theodorianum und die Theologische Fakultät. Früher befand sich an dieser Stelle die erste Universität Westfalens, die 1614 gegründet wurde. In der Haube des mächtigen Turmes befand sich die Sternwarte des einstigen Jesuitenkollegs.
