The New World [CZ: Novy Svet] belongs among the most romantic places in old Prague. It is caused by the local historic development, which is mainly formed by small single-storied houses with small rooms, paved road and the fact that it is situated outside the main touristic way and thus there is a calm atmosphere. Once it inspired the poet and writer, Jan Neruda (1834-1891) and writer and journalist Jakub Arbes (1840-1914).

The former Hradcany suburb rose shortly after establishment of Hradcany, in the half of the 14th century and it was included into the city fortification. It was burnt down at the beginning of Hussite wars in 1420 and in 1541 during great fire in the Lesser Town, the Prague Castle and Hradcany. However, even in the 16th century and in the following one it was restored and extended. Poor people lived there in the past. What their miniature houses missed to be beautiful was substituted in names of the local house-signs. For example we can find there At the Gold Grape, At the Gold Bush, At the Gold Pear, At the Gold Stork, At the Gold Leg, At the Gold Star, At the Gold Plough and the like. Therefore it is said with a bit exaggeration that Prague is the goldest there.

Among numerous historic curiosities let’s mentioned the house At the Gold Plough no. 90. In 1937 there was placed a bronze memorial tablet saying: „Fr. Ondrícek, a famous Czech violinist, was born in this house on 29th April 1857“, in the upper part there is relief portrait of the master, a piece by Jan Kavan. Under the portrait there is a laurel sprig.

Jedním ze zdejších romantických a dobre udržovaných objektu je i obytný dum U Zlatého pluhu, cp. 90, Nový Svet c. 25. Puvodne byl soucástí objektu cp. 88, s nímž byl spolecne budován od šedesátých let 17. století. Po rozdelení v roce 1804 byl stavebne upravován ješte v roce 1835. Práve tento dum bude vyprávet životní príbeh svého nekdejšího a bezesporu nejslavnejšího obyvatele, houslového virtuosa a pedagoga Františka Ondrícka.

František Ondrícek zacal hrát na své první ctvrtové houslicky již v peti letech, dokonce podle not. Od samého pocátku byl považován za zázracné díte a otec byl na nej samozrejme velmi pyšný. Jako zázracné díte vystupoval s otcovou kapelou po pražských kavárnách, kde sklízel první ovace. Kapela to byla vskutku rodinná. Hráli v ní prvorozený syn Josef na kontrabas i další dva synové z druhého manželství, Jan na violu a Karel na housle.Vzhledem k castému koncertování a pilnému cvicení na housle Františku Ondríckovi nezbývalo mnoho casu na školu. Obecní školu sice dokoncil, ale s nevalným prospechem.

Pri svém absolventském koncertu, kdy František Ondrícek predvedl Beethovenuv koncert, doslova nadchl prítomné odborníky i obecenstvo. Své vedomosti si ješte více prohloubil studiem na hudební konzervatori v Paríži, kde mezi svými vrstevníky absolutne nemel konkurenci.

Zvláštní zmínku zaslouží jeho koncertovaní v Itálii, vlasti slavného houslisty Nicola Paganiniho (1782-1840), oznacovaného jako krále houslí. Zde byl v roce 1892 František Ondrícek jmenován cestným clenem Akademie sv. Cecilie v Ríme. Celá Itálie byla nadšena jeho mistrovskou hrou. Pri jednom z koncertu v Itálii prítomný syn Paganiniho, baron Achille Paganini (1825-1896), pri poslechu Ondríckovy hry vzrušene zvolal: „Poznávám smycec svého otce.“ Na dukaz obdivu k jeho hre nechal otevrít Paganiniho hrobku, aby se mu mohl Ondrícek poklonit. Náhodne vypadnuvší šroub pak Ondrícek s velkou úctou nosil celý život v pouzdre svých houslí jako talisman.

Nechal se premluvit i ke koncertnímu turné po Spojených státech amerických, které dlouho odmítal, nebot cesta po mori byla pro neho ze zdravotních duvodu utrpením. Koncertoval ve všech vetších amerických mestech, jenom v New Yorku vystoupil dvanáctkrát.Tam, kde byly pocetné kolonie Cechoamericanu, sklízel nejvetší ovace od svých krajanu.

Na rodném dome Františka Ondrícka U Zlatého pluhu, cp. 90/25 na Novém Svete na Hradcanech byla u príležitosti 80. výrocí narození v roce 1937 osazena bronzová deska, v jejíž horní polovine je Mistruv reliéfní portrét, dílo Jana Kavana. Pod portrétem je snítka vavrínu a text: „Fr. Ondrícek, slavný houslista ceský, narodil se v tomto dome dne 29. dubna 1857.“
