Along the Circular Quay at the Sydney Harbor, a number of writers are memorialized with plaques set into the walk. Besides Mark Twain, there is Charles Darwin, Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle, and James Michener.

The plaque reads:
"Mark Twain
1835-1910
Australian history is almost always picturesque, indeed it is so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to offer.
It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies.
And all of a fresh sort, not mouldy old stale ones. It is full of surprises, and adventures, and incongruities, and incredibilities, but they are all true, they all happened.

Following the Equator, 1897

Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens). An American, worked as a printer, river-boat pilot and journalist. He came to Australia in 1895, during a world lecture tour, recording his impressions of events, including the Melbourne Cup.

The second plaque which explains the Writer's walk reads:
"WRITERS WALK
What we are and how we see ourselves evolves fundamentally from the written and spoken word. The Writers Walk demonstrates that this evolutionary process continues to channel the thoughts and perceptions, the hopes and the fears of writers who have known this great city and its people.

This walk was dedicated on 13 February 1991 by
The Hon. Peter Collins, MP
Minister for the Arts
