In 1926, the colleagues of Andrew Jay Cross dedicated this Sequoia in Mt. Tamalpais State Park during the annual convention of the American Optometric Association in San Francisco. Cross, born in Antwerp, NY in 1855, came to Visalia, CA in 1876 where he worked as a jeweler, watchmaker and refracting optician. He went on to help form the AOA and work toward the legislation of the new profession of optometry. Cross was known for his pioneering work in "dynamic skiametry" (retinoscopy) and many patents for specialized lenses and ophthalmic tools.
