La chapelle Sainte-Foy est le siège de la Confrérie des Pénitents blancs de Montpellier depuis 1518. Citée pour la première fois en 1228, elle fut construite un peu avant, vraisemblablement au xiie siècle. Mais nous ne connaissons pratiquement rien de l'aspect de la chapelle à cette époque car elle fut détruite lors des Guerres de religions.

Rendue à la Confrérie après le siège de la ville par Louis XIII en 1622, la chapelle Sainte-Foy fut reconstruite entre 1623 et 1626. Elle présente notamment un important plafond à caisson du xviie siècle. Les murs furent couverts de lambris en bois doré dus à l'architecte Augustin-Charles d'Aviler entre 1697 et 1706. Dans sa partie haute, des dessus de portes figurant des angelots alternent avec des médaillons, le tout peint par Antoine Ranc et son atelier à la fin du XVIIe siècle. La partie basse de ces lambris est garnie de peintures réalisées au début du xixe siècle pour remplacer celles disparues durant la Révolution française. Le tambour de style rocaille et le portail d'entrée furent posés en 1747. Il présente des sculptures d'une grande finesse.

La chapelle des Pénitents blancs de Montpellier fait l'objet d'un classement au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté du 17 février 1995.

[EN] : The chapel Sainte-Foy is the headquarters of the Brotherhood of White Penitents of Montpellier since 1518. Quoted for the first time in 1228, it was built a little before, probably in the twelfth century. Returned to the Brotherhood after the siege of the city by Louis XIII in 1622, the chapel Sainte-Foy was rebuilt between 1623 and 1626. It has a particular coffered ceiling of the seventeenth century. The walls were covered with gilded wood paneling by the architect Augustin-Charles d'Aviler between 1697 and 1706. In the upper part, the door-top showing cherubs alternate with medallions, all painted by Antoine Ranc and his son. workshop in the late seventeenth century. The lower part of these paneling is garnished with paintings made in the early nineteenth century to replace those disappeared during the French Revolution. The Rococ style drum and the entrance gate were laid in 1747. It presents sculptures of great finesse.

The Chapel of the White Penitents of Montpellier is the subject of a classification under the historic monuments by decree of February 17, 1995.
