The coat of arms of Aarau contained an eagle already in 1270, then still together with a lime tree. The red chief has been documented since 1470.
The eagle ("Aar") as a heraldic animal of the city is a folk etymology reinterpretation of the name of town, which in reality originated from the name of the river Aare.
I found the flag with those of the canton of Aargau and Switzerland over a shop in the south of the old town.

Das Wappen von Aarau enthielt schon 1270 einen Adler, damals noch zusammen mit einer Linde. Das rote Schildhaupt ist seit 1470 dokumentiert.
Der Adler (Aar) als Wappentier der Stadt ist eine volketymologische Umdeutung des Gemeindenamens, der ursprünglich aus dem Fluss Aare entstand.
Ich fand die Flagge mit denen des Kantons Aargau und der Schweiz über einem Geschäft im Süden der Altstadt.
