This flagpole and plaque was originally built here to commemorate JFK's visit to Big Cedar and speech at this location in 1961, where he officially opened the US 259 highway through southeastern Oklahoma.
The original 1961 plaque by the flagpole reads as follows:
"US HIGHWAY 259
OCTOBER 26, 1961
While president of the United States
JOHN F. KENNEDY
gave the dedicatory address at this site. He was a guest of Senator Robert S. Kerr who has led the way for the development of his native state of Oklahoma.
