Graves Creek Cemetery is a small cemetery just northwest of Hitchita, OK. It is a simple cemetery, without any flair or pomp and circumstance for its famous burial. While Mr. Sampson's grave is covered by a traditional Native American gravehouse, a modern granite headstone at the front reads:
"Sonny"

In Loving Memory
Description: Will Sampson was born in Okmulgee, OK, a Creek. While much of his life was spent as a successful rodeo performer, it wasn't until producers Saul Zaentz and Michael Douglas were looking for a large Native American to play the part of Chief Bromden in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Given his height -- 6'7" -- and an impressive interview, he got the part without any acting experience. He later played Ten Bears in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and Taylor in "Poltergeist II", with continued film and television roles, and he even did some stage work. He also painted, and he founded and served on the board of directors of the American Indian Registry for the Performing Arts. Sclerodoma claimed him at the young age of 53 in 1987.
