In New Shoreham (Block Island), at the northern part of the island, is Block Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The refuge entrance is located at the northern end of the Corn Neck Road. There is a parking lot there, and a sign for the refuge.
The refuge currently has 134 acres of land in various places, mostly on the western side of the north end of the park. The refuge covers beach and coastal habitats, bordering both ocean and brackish water pond (Sachem Pond).
The refuge is noted for its high diversity of bird species during the fall migration. The web site states that this is due to younger birds 'overflying' the mainland as they go south and end up landing on the island to rest and eat before moving on. The Beane Point Facility is on the property.
A fact sheet stated that the refuge is unstaffed due to budget constraints.
