Payne's Frozen Custard may not sound like a coffe joint, but inside are 20 to 25 daily roasts that will make you wonder why it doesn't say anything outside. In fact it appears to be a popular hangout for students at Indiana Weslyian University.

When we first stopped in here to get some custard on our way between Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, we were shocked to see an extensive coffee list. We've been back since and were amazed to have a gormet dinner for just $5. Now looking up the history of the place, I'm stunned once again. Here's what a local school newspaper had to say about it:
Leaving his home in Yorkshire, England at age 21, Payne had only one goal in mind.
"I wanted some adventure, so I got on a plane."
The plane he got on landed in New York City, and left Payne with no particular place to go and no more than $1,000 in his pocket.
Growing up in England, Payne had heard of an American legend by the name of James Dean and decided that he wanted to visit his birthplace, so he hitchhiked to Fairmount, Ind., where he met his future wife.
After moving to Los Angeles, Calif., where he owned and operated a successful online clothing business, Payne moved back to the Grant County area and decided that he would contribute his own bit of genius to it.
"After eating ice cream, you often ask for a hot drink," says Payne. "So I decided on a frozen custard and espresso shop."
Almost all of their coffee is roasted from Fair Trade beans adding to the liberal flair in a conservative area of the country. It's also located across the street from the less than liberally minded Cracker Barrel, so the constant sounds of NPR make for an interesting dynamic when unsuspecting travelers on I-69 come in for a desert.
The hours of operation seem to fluctuate based more on school schedules than on days of the week. Hopefully we can ask the staff more about this when we stop by again. And we are sure to drop in on occassion.
