This circa 1905 red white and blue windmill is a Model "E" Windmill by the U.S. Wind Engine and Pump Company of Batavia, Illinois. The mill traces its origins to the Eclipse windmill, invented in 1867 by Reverend Leonard Wheeler of Beloit, Wisconsin. When the patented rights to the Eclipse windmill expired in 1901, its design was copied my many manufacturers due to its simplicity of design and was favored by owners of large ranches. The large size of the Model "E" was also favored by railroads which required large amount of water for their steam locomotives.
