This grey granite block memorial was installed at the Tupelo National Battlefield in 1918. It is a relic of the "Lost Cause" movement that sought to recast the US Civil War from a war fought to preserve white supremacy and slavery into a noble and just fight for Southern civil rights.

The memorial reads as follows:

"TO OUR
CONFEDERATE DEAD
THAT GAVE THEIR
LIVES IN BATTLE
HERE ON JULY 14, 1865
FOR THEIR RIGHTS.

ERECTED 1918"
