On this site of the present church was founded in 1483 the Augustinian monastery of the Holy Spirit.
From the very beginning, the monastery was distinguished by scandals related to the conduct of the nuns, documented both by procedural acts and by Giuseppe Tassini in his book "Venetian Curiosities".
In the first decades of 1500, when the fondamenta delle Zattere (promenade) was laid on the Giudecca Canal, the monastery was also radically restructured: the old church was destroyed to make way for the cloister and in 1506 the construction of the existing building facing the canal. At the same time, next to the church and separated from it by the Calle del Monastero, the building of the school of the Holy Spirit was also built, always facing the canal.
From the outside the church does not seem in good condition and it is not open to the public. It is used very rarely for ceremonies such as wedding and funerals.
