Ce monument a été inauguré le 27 septembre 1964 par Sa Majesté Le Roi Baudouin et la reine Fabiola durant les cérémonies de célébration du 50e anniversaire de la bataille de Liège.
Cette statue de bronze représentant le roi Albert Ier. Le sculpteur Charles Leplae avait donné du Roi-Chevalier une image assez conforme à la mémoire populaire, mais sans couvre-chef, nu-tête et juché sur son cheval, défenseur du pays dans son uniforme de chef des armées en 1914.
Albert Ier portait les titres de prince de Belgique, de duc de Saxe, de prince de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha et, après son accession au trône en 1909, de roi des Belges (C'est le troisième Roi). Après la Première Guerre mondiale (1914-1918), il ne porte plus les titres duc de Saxe et prince de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha, qui étaient d'origine allemande. Toutefois ces titres sont encore présents sur certains actes officiels (actes de naissance et de décès, par exemple).

This monument was inaugurated on 27 September 1964 by His Majesty King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola during the celebration ceremonies of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Liège.
This bronze statue of King Albert I. The sculptor Charles Leplae had given the King-Knight an image quite in keeping with the popular memory, but without headgear, bare-headed and perched on his horse, defender of the country in his uniform of chief of the armies in 1914.
Albert I carried the titles of Prince of Belgium, Duke of Saxony, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and, after his accession to the throne in 1909, King of the Belgians (This is the third King). After the First World War (1914-1918), it no longer bears the titles Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who were of German origin. However, these titles are still present on certain official acts (birth and death certificates, for example).
